Creating and Communicating a Compelling ‘Case For Change’ Proves Critical as Major Business Unit Separates into Two

SITUATION

A Fortune 500 company made the bold decision to separate one of its primary business units into two in order to realize untapped market potential. They enlisted the help of Blue Beyond to support the large-scale change project.

 

WHAT WE DID

Successful change leadership requires clear communication of the “case for change” as well as a compelling articulation of the “future state vision” and how employees can engage and contribute to create that future.

Our charter was to help lead and manage the overall change work stream for the division separation. In addition to supporting day-to-day implementation of change management activities to ensure coordination of stakeholder communication and engagement, Blue Beyond partnered closely with the new division leader and his leadership team to create, articulate and communicate the new group’s vision, values, strategy and action plan.

Over the course of this engagement, we:

  • Facilitated in-depth working sessions with the new division leadership team to create and align on the new vision, value proposition and strategic agenda. We then worked with each leadership team member to develop a comprehensive action plan to support the strategy.

    Designed and supported a multi-day leadership offsite with the top 50 leaders of the new division to launch the new vision and strategy and generate understanding, engagement and commitment to achieve its goals.
  • Created and executed a comprehensive communications and engagement plan to support the separation activities and the launch of the new division.
  • Helped build lasting capability of the HR function to support change initiatives across the company by creating a customized change toolkit and facilitating a two-day training workshop to help them align on their change management approach and leverage the tools.

 

OUTCOME

Upon the successful separation and launch of the new division, the company has seen solid financial performance and revenue growth in line with business expectations and very little disruption to business operations. In addition, the new division leader reported a thriving culture of engagement and reduced union activity in a number of its locations.
