Mariah Cherniss


Mariah has been with Blue Beyond since 2006. As a team veteran and seasoned consultant, Mariah works closely with leaders and teams to facilitate organizational alignment, engage employees, navigate change, and achieve business results. Mariah is known for her ability to build strong, authentic client partnerships, as well as her agility in understanding what clients envision and turning that vision into something both actionable and valuable.

Prior to Blue Beyond, Mariah worked as a consultant at ROI Communication, and before that as a lead researcher at Melcrum Publishing, where she co-authored two global best practice research studies: “Employee Engagement: How to build a high-performance workforce” and “Effective Communication From the Top: The definitive research report on how to improve senior leadership communication.”

She holds a BA in Communications from USC, with a minor in Leadership Studies and graduated Summa Cum Laude.

What skills and expertise do you bring to the team?

I bring a depth of knowledge and over 10 years of consulting experience in organizational effectiveness, change management, internal and executive communications, employee engagement, team building, leadership alignment and strategic planning. I have worked with many types of clients – from HR to IT, Sales/Marketing to Engineering – in a variety of industries, including high-tech, retail, academia, travel and energy.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

While I very much enjoy partnering with clients to develop strategies and plans to address the business challenges and opportunities they are confronting, I am even more passionate about rolling up my sleeves to actually implement those strategies and plans and see the results. I also very much value the long-term relationships and collaborations with clients – both supporting them in their professional endeavors, as well as learning and caring about them as people.

How long have you been at Blue Beyond?

I am a very proud founding member of the Blue Beyond team. I worked with our CEO, Cheryl Fields Tyler, at a previous company and so valued her leadership, mentorship and friendship that I wanted to be a part of the endeavor to create and build Blue Beyond Consulting. I couldn’t be happier with my decision to jump on board for this Blue Beyond adventure.

If you could take the year off, what would you do?

I was lucky enough to do so in 2007-2008 and traveled the world with my then fiance and now husband. We visited 20 countries in the course of the year, traveling by land from Norway to Hong Kong via Siberia, living on the small island of Yap for a month, trekking Patagonia, getting married in the South Pacific and much more. If I get the privilege of taking another year off in my future, I would do it again in a heartbeat, but this time bring my kids and explore new places!

What did you learn about yourself when you moved to a new place?

I have lived in several new places throughout my life, both in the US and abroad. Each experience has been exhilarating and scary and taught me to be flexible, manage ambiguity, tune-in to the present, be patient with my “change curve” and reach outside my comfort zone to learn, connect and grow.

How does good consulting happen?

By asking good questions, listening carefully to understand context and nuance, collaborating to find and implement the best solutions and, most importantly, by building meaningful, authentic relationships founded on trust, honesty and integrity. In my experience, the best results have come from close working partnerships with clients and shared commitment to the outcomes that are best for the client and the company.
