Tom Tyler
Acting as the Chief Financial Officer for Blue Beyond Consulting, Tom Tyler manages all operational and financial aspects of the business including financial planning and reporting, accounting, and human resources.
Recently retired ("untired") from full-time teaching, Tom had been a Bay Area high school educator for three decades, with expertise in earth, life, and environmental science. His specialty has been to create new courses and curricula that "dissolve the walls" between the classroom and the natural world and invite students to expand and enrich their learning experiences in real-world settings. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies from UC Berkeley and a teaching credential and M.A. in Education from San Francisco State University.
During his twenty-six year tenure at Bishop O'Dowd High School, he co-founded the Living Laboratory, a three-acre on-campus outdoor environmental education site serving 1200 students. He served as lead educational consultant to the East Bay Regional Park District in establishing their Educators Academy, a multi-disciplinary program designed to assist teachers in utilizing local parks as extended classrooms for their students. He has been the co-coordinator of Close to Home, which hosts monthly public lectures and field trips on Bay Area ecology and wildlife, the founder of Staying Connected, a family-oriented hiking and science enrichment program, and the director of Camp WOW! "Wonders of the Watershed", a summer program of exploration and discovery for children and their families in the East Bay.
He is a daily walker, occasional backpacker, and budding landscape photographer. He especially enjoys camping with his wife, Cheryl, and their two children, Sage and Maya. He also shares his love for nature with the Blue Beyond team-- and quite literally helps keep the team "grounded"-- by designing and leading team-building hikes and other outdoor activities. He helps coordinate the Blue Beyond Trust projects and acts as a liaison with several of our project partners. His particular passion is helping our company find ways to serve the larger community while developing sustainable and Earth-friendly practices. He is currently leading the effort at Bishop O’Dowd High School, where his children are currently enrolled, to build a state-of-the art “green” Environmental Science Center.
